Coming home to yourself
The self you are trying to become is not at the end of a long road. On maitri, homecoming and the quiet return to who you already are. With Aparna Kher.

Where is home, really? Not the building. The feeling. That rare, settled sense of being fully yourself, at ease in your own skin, no longer performing or bracing or reaching for somewhere else. If that feeling has been hard to find lately, this last piece is for you, because everything I do, in the end, comes down to this one idea: the work is not to become someone new. It is to come home to who you already are.
We spend so much of life leaving ourselves. We learn early which parts of us are welcome and which are not, and we quietly pack the unwelcome parts away. We perform the acceptable version. We reach for the next achievement, the next approval, the next arrival, certain that home is somewhere ahead of us, once we have earned it. And we end up, many of us, successful and exhausted and strangely far from ourselves.
I know that distance well. I built a life that looked right from the outside and left me a stranger to the woman living it. The turning point was not adding something. It was coming back. Learning, slowly, to meet my own feelings with maitri (loving-kindness) rather than judgement. To let the body back into the conversation. To say the true thing rather than the smooth thing. To rest without earning it. To belong to a sangha (community) rather than struggle alone. None of it was new information. All of it was homecoming.
This is the thread through everything I have written here. Self-compassion is coming home to the parts of you exiled by shame. Nonviolent Communication is coming home to your real feelings and needs. Somatic work is coming home to the body you left behind. Mindfulness is coming home to this moment, the only place you have ever actually lived. Gratitude is coming home to what is already here. Even grief, in its way, is a coming home, to how much you loved.
Here is the quiet secret at the centre of it. The self you are trying to become is not waiting at the end of a long road of self-improvement. It is underneath. Underneath the performing, the bracing, the borrowed voices and the packed-away parts. You do not have to build it. You have to uncover it, gently, one honest act of kindness towards yourself at a time.
That does not mean the outer life stops changing. You may still move through a transition, leave what no longer fits, grow into something larger. But the change lands differently when it grows from home rather than from lack. You are no longer running from a self you cannot bear. You are moving from a self you have finally befriended.
So let me leave you not with an instruction but an invitation. Today, in one small way, come home. Place a hand on your heart when the hard feeling comes. Say the true thing to someone you trust. Rest for ten minutes without guilt. Notice one good moment all the way through. Meet the stranger in the mirror with kindness. Any of these is a doorstep.
You were never as lost as you feared. The self you are looking for has been here the whole time, waiting, patiently, for you to stop leaving. Come home. You are welcome here. You always were.
